Our MP Ben Everitt kindly hosted members of our community youth council during an enlightening visit to the heart of our democracy, the Houses of Parliament, on the 15 November.
As Chair of the Community Youth Council (CYC) I had the privilege of leading a group of enthusiastic and engaged young individuals who were eager to learn more about the workings of our government.
During our visit, Mr. Everitt generously arranged for our party to have a comprehensive tour of the historic Parliament buildings, offering valuable insights into the legislative process and sharing anecdotes that brought the rich history of our political institutions to life. We were able to visit the public gallery in the House of Commons to watch the live debate following The King’s Speech on November 7.
We also had the opportunity for a Question & Answer session later in the day with him in his office, it was heartening to see our elected representatives actively engaging with the youth and taking steps to demystify the workings of government. Mr. Everitt’s commitment to inclusivity and his support for the aspirations of our young community members have left a lasting impact, inspiring a new generation of informed and empowered citizens.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Ben Everitt MP for his time and generosity. This experience will undoubtedly be a catalyst for increased civic participation among our youth, fostering a sense of responsibility and pride in our democratic values.
Following the tour, the CYC visited the Emmeline Pankhurst Memorial which stands at the entrance of Victoria Tower Gardens, sited at the southwest corner of the Palace of Westminster. It was most fitting for the youth to understand the heroism involved in achieving the women’s vote and political status of all women in today’s world. This was followed by a walk past Downing Street, the Cenotaph and a photo opportunity at Horse Guards.
